HOW MANY LUMENS DO I NEED FOR AN OUTDOOR SECURITY LIGHTING?

So, how do you determine the appropriate number of lumens (light output)? It depends on the amount of light required for your specific purpose. If you are looking for the right lumens for security lighting, take into account the dimensions and layout of the area you want to illuminate.

 

As a general guideline, security lights should be significantly brighter than regular lighting. Look for lights that provide a minimum of 700 lumens. However, it's crucial to avoid excessive brightness. It's not a good idea to have thousands of lumens projecting directly into your neighbour's windows. Such intense lighting can cause discomfort and disturbances. Additionally, it's important to consider the impact on birds and wildlife. Excessively bright lights can disrupt their sleep patterns and unnecessarily consume more power.

 

WHAT IS THE BEST COLOUR TEMPERATURE FOR SECURITY LIGHTING?

 

As a general guideline, warmer colour temperatures, typically ranging from 2500k to 2700k, are commonly employed to accentuate architectural elements. They impart a cozy and inviting ambiance, resembling the soft, yellowish glow associated with traditional incandescent bulbs.

 

However, when aiming for a heightened level of security, cooler white colour temperatures in the range of 5500k to 6000k can be opted for. These cooler temperatures emit a bluish or daylight-like light, offering a brighter and more alert illumination. This choice of colour temperature may assist in enhancing visibility and potentially deterring intruders in security-focused applications.

 

In summary, warmer colour temperatures are generally favoured for highlighting architectural features, while cooler white colour temperatures can be considered to achieve an increased level of security by providing a brighter and more attention-grabbing lighting effect.
